The Light Beyond Gold
As diyas glow across homes this Dhanteras, we often focus on the outer signs of prosperity — the gold we buy, the lamps we light, the new beginnings we hope for.But beneath these rituals lies a deeper truth — a truth the ancients captured in the story of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean.
This was no mere myth. It was a map of consciousness — a reminder that every act of creation begins with a churning within.
The Mandaar Within
In the great churning, the Devas and Asuras pulled the serpent Vasuki from either side, using Mandaar Parvat, the sacred mountain, as their pivot.Lord Vishnu, as Kurma, the divine turtle, steadied the mountain — a symbol of grounding consciousness amidst turbulence.
From this divine effort emerged both poison and nectar, reminding us that enlightenment is not born from avoidance but from the courage to embrace both light and shadow.
When the deadly halahala poison surfaced, it was Lord Shiva who consumed it, transforming destruction into protection — his blue throat becoming a mark of compassion and transcendence.
And when the nectar of immortality arose, it was Lord Dhanvantari, a manifestation of Vishnu, who emerged holding the golden vessel — symbolizing healing, vitality, and divine balance.
Together, Shiva and Dhanvantari show us the dual truth of spiritual evolution — that to heal, one must first face what is toxic within; to rise, one must steady the self amidst the churn.
